Love is definitely in the air at our Miami International Airport (MIA) hub this week. Did you know that MIA receives 91 percent of all flowers imported to the U.S.? Primarily from South America, a total of more than 359,396 tons worth $1.65 billion are imported at MIA annually.
Valentine’s Day represents an incredible increase in demand for the flower industry, one that all stakeholders at MIA, from airport officials to airline and customs staff, must handle with efficiency and care. From January 1 to February 15, MIA projects that a total of 90,154 tons of cut flowers will have landed for sweethearts across the country, and expects more than 1,500 tons flower stems to arrive daily during this year’s Valentine’s Day rush.
